How to Secure Your Network and Prevent Unwanted Devices from Accessing Your Cast to Device Feature

Question:

What are the steps to disconnect or block an unwanted device from the cast to device option in Windows 10 and Google Chrome?

I have a problem with an unknown device that appears in both my phone and computer when I try to cast media content. The device is a Sony TV that does not belong to me. I want to remove it from the list of available devices and prevent it from accessing my network. I have attached an image of the device for reference.

Answer:

If you have ever tried to cast media content from your Windows 10 PC or Google Chrome browser to a nearby device, such as a smart TV or a speaker, you may have noticed that sometimes there are devices that you do not recognize or own. This can be annoying and potentially risky, as these devices may be able to access your network or interfere with your casting.

Fortunately, there are ways to disconnect or block these unwanted devices from the cast to device option in Windows 10 and Google Chrome. Here are the steps to do so:

For Windows 10:

  • To disconnect a device that is currently casting from your PC, you can click on the cast media to device icon in the taskbar, and then select Disconnect.
  • To block a device from appearing in the list of available devices, you can go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices. Here, you can see all the devices that are paired or connected to your PC. You can click on the device that you want to block, and then select Remove device. This will unpair the device from your PC and prevent it from showing up in the cast to device option.
  • Alternatively, you can also block a device from your network by going to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks. Here, you can see all the networks that your PC has connected to. You can click on the network that the unwanted device is using, and then select Properties. Under Network profile, you can change the setting from Public to Private. This will make your PC invisible to other devices on the same network, and vice versa.
  • For

Google Chrome:

  • – To disconnect a device that is currently casting from your Chrome browser, you can click on the cast icon in the toolbar, and then select Stop casting.
  • – To block a device from appearing in the list of available devices, you can go to chrome://settings/cast. Here, you can see all the devices that are compatible with Chrome’s cast feature. You can click on the Sources dropdown menu, and then select Cast to. This will allow you to choose which devices you want to cast to, and which ones you want to hide. You can uncheck the device that you want to block, and it will no longer show up in the cast option.
